list view implies table like layout, where each item is rendered as table row and each "positon" is rendered as column. When template uses item view it is up to the tempalte to render each item, here positions are positions inside each item. E..g. you can do 1 full width leading article + 2 column layout for the rest of items with list, but you can do that with blog template that uses item view.
