on a textarea you can add a jQuery plugin specialized on word counting. You will find a lot of this kind of plugin on your prefered search engine.

in order to add custom code you need to install this plugin http://www.seblod.com/products/1854.

1) In your form you need to create a field with the ‘onBeforeRender’ type to include the javascript library as shown on this screenshot

This is the code that must be put in the ‘BeforeRender’ field:

$document = JFactory::getDocument();

$document->addScript('https://cdn.rawgit.com/qwertypants/jQuery-Word-and-Character-Counter-Plugin/master/jquery.word-and-character-counter.min.js');

You can change the script location if you download the library on your server.

2) You need to create a new field of type ‘’Script (JS)’ to initialize the Javascript plugin as shown here

This is the code present in the ‘JS’ field:

$(document).ready(function() {    
    $("#textarea").counter({
       count: 'up',
       goal: 10
    });
});

You need to replace ‘#textarea’ with the id of your textarea field and it will work.

I think that's your issue.

I adde the $ but that did not resolve it.

Am I using the correct "id of the textarea field"?

yes you are using the correct id as per the screenshot shown in your previous post.

The detailed method has been reproduced and works perfectly. Maybe it's an issue with other scripts you are using on your site, but without access to it we cannot do anything. Maybe you should consider buying support to have someone to fix it for you.

I did see this in the Firebug Console if that helps troubleshoot this issue:
